‘We’ve got Magic to do’ – Unlimited: The Music of Stephen Schwartz Concert (online) Review

Stephen Schwartz is one of the best loved composers and lyricists in the world, famous for his role in many much-loved musicals including Wicked, Pippin, Godspell and The Prince of Egypt. His music is famous all over the world and thanks to Thespie, a new theatre streaming service, we have the chance to enjoy some of his extraordinary music at home with Unlimited: The Music of Stephen Schwartz.

The ensembled cast boast many West End credits between them, each have vocals that can raise the roof. The cast includes Alice Fearn, Sophie Evans, Carl Man, Melanie La Barrie, Dianne Pilkington, Oliver Tompsett, Alexia Khadime, Liam Tamne and Nikki Bentley. Other the years, many have appeared in the smash hit Wicked and more recently, Khadime and Tamne were appearing in The Prince of Egypt. All wonderful talents in their own rights, but together, this cast are the thing that dreams are made of.

The concert was filmed with all of the current precautions in place, but you can easily look past the social distancing and all that, and just enjoy the music. With performances of songs from ‘Godspell’, ‘Pippin’, ‘The Prince of Egypt’, ‘Wicked’and ‘The Bakers Wife’ , there is a lot of enjoy with this one. I could go on and talk about each and every performance, but I don’t think you would want me to ramble on like that, so I will just pick out a few highlights.

Sophie Evans performance of ‘The Spark of Creation’ from ‘Children of Eden’ was beautiful whilst Dianne Pilkington impressed greatly with her take on ‘Meadowlark’ from the lesser-known musical ‘The Baker’s Wife’. Liam Tamne showcased the wonder of the The Prince of Egypt soundtrack (now nominated for a grammy award) with his performance of ‘Footprints in the Sand’ and Carl Man gave a wonderful performance of ‘Beautiful City’ from ‘Godspell’. We were also treated to a number of duets including an incredible rendition of ‘When You Believe’ from ‘The Prince of Egypt’ by Alice Fearn and Nikki Bentley.

Unlimited: The Music of Stephen Schwartz is a treat of a concert to watch from home, and a bargain at £15 for the hour long concert, so thank you Thespie for that. The cast have incredible vocals, and it is just a joy to see such talents performing again, and singing such wonderful songs.
