Sports Massage clinic
1 hour

In this session I spent 1 hour in the morning between 10-11am massaging the front and the back of my clients legs.

What happened in the session:
During this session, I massaged the same client as I did on the 12/11/2018 this time, I informed him after last session not being enough pressure for him that I would start as hard as I could go and keep easing off until he told me it wa comfortable for him. so therefore, I applied a lot of pressure to the gastrocnemius when massaging him using Effleurage and petrissage which he immediately asked for less pressure, I eased off slightly and he asked me to ease off a bit more until I reached a point he was satisfied was beneficial to him.
I found that causing him pain to begin with was not the best way of relaxing this client and therefore I would need to rethink my method of finding the correct pressure for them and find another way ready for next session.
I worked well at keeping good time and organisation throughout this session. Beforehand I managed to turn up early to set the bed up before my client arrived and during I made sure that I focused on certain areas using the better of my techniques from last session that my client liked to keep working deeper into the muscle while using my time effectively.

In this session, I used massage lotion as my medium which as stated in my previous reflection that i was not confident in using to practice, also my client likes this and chose it as a preference over the beeswax. This is still something that I need to get used to however, I did well using this medium after previously using it, I got used to how much I needed.

Areas for improvement:

Do not apply to much pressure! Although in the first session with this client they did not feel I applied enough pressure applying too much pressure can cause them pain. However, I did not cause any pain this client it could be a potential threat to cause further injury to this client. To rethink my methods, I would apply a medium amount of pressure and work up until they tell me that they are feeling it to be too painful and then ease to a point they are comfortable with. This will be slightly trial and error at the start with each client however, after a while it will become easier.

Work on the whole leg both medial and lateral sides as it is easy to focus on working down just the middle of the leg. However, I need to work on the adductors on the medial side of the leg and massage gently around the Iliotibial band on the lateral side. By doing this you will be massaging all the muscles in the leg loosing and releasing tension throughout rather than just down the centre of the leg.

Things to remembers:

  1.  DO NOT HURT THE CLIENT
  2. WORK THE WHOLE LEG
  3. USE FULL HOUR AND BOOK LONGER SESSION
Effleurage of the Gastrocnemius
