Open clinic- second session

1 hour

What happened during the session:

Due to the low numbers of clients in the clinic today we as therapists paired up combining our knowledge and working on a client between the two of us. This allowed us to discuss what we were doing and what was best for the client based on the similarities and differences in knowledge and technique. The client we treated had a supraspinatus impingement in the left shoulder. Neither of us was aware of what this was, got the client to explain and they were not sure of the exact facts of the conditions and therefore lacked knowledge. Before the next session will ensure I have researched upon this and how I can help to rehab and make this feel better. The easing factor of this condition for the client was taping of the shoulder to help them with posture due to them being quite tall the client had always slouched to make herself look smaller around friends, therefore, correcting posture will help to ease the pain. They were allergic to kinesiology tape and therefore while massaging a test to see if they were allergic to the underlay of rigid taping was conducted with a test strip on the client’s arm which did not get a reaction and therefore rigid taping was applied for the client to help improve posture while myself and the other sports therapist discussed the best way to help correct the posture of the client we agreed on the taping shown in the picture below.

Areas for improvement:

Lack of knowledge on the condition of the client meant that I did not know the correct way to go about treating this client and therefore my lack of knowledge leaded to me asking my supervisor about the topic.

I knew my knowledge of this injury was not the best and therefore my confidence was not very strong. To treat a client you must have confidence in your knowledge and what you’re doing else the client will not have confidence in you. This can be overcome by

Not knowing the main contraindications or why they were a contraindication/ the main reasons why I wouldn’t be able to massage and why it could be made worse. Brushing up on knowledge would be beneficial and going back over lecture notes to refresh red flags and contraindications is needed.
