Mark Hughes sacked as Southampton manager

Southampton have sacked manager Mark Hughes after eight months in charge.

The club have also confirmed that assistant first-team manager Mark Bowen and assistant first-team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also left the club.

In a statement posted on the clubs website, they confirmed the decision to remove Hughes from his position and added: “The search for a new manager to take the club forward is already under way.”

Hughes leaves ‘The Saints’ after a 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United on Saturday with the side currently 18th in the Premier League.

The 55-year-old was hired in March to save the club from relegation last season, and they did so after winning two of their final four games. However, that form could not be replicated this season, as only one win from the opening 14 games sees the South Coast side struggling in the relegation places which ultimately led to Hughes losing his job.

During his eight month spell, Hughes would win just three out of 22 games in the Premier League with a win percentage of just 13.6%, his lowest as a manager.

First-team assistant coach Kelvin Davis will take temporary charge for the next game, a daunting trip to Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night to face Tottenham Hotspur.
