United bounce back from defeat last time out to Welling with a dominant 5-2 victory at Plainmoor and regain their position at the top of the National League South table.

Gary Johnson made two changes from the side that faced Welling last Saturday. Jean Yves-Koue Niate came in for suspended Kyle Cameron following his red card at Welling and fit again Kalvin Lumbumbo-Kalala replaced Ruari Keating in attack.

After defeat last time out, United looked to get right on the front foot in the early proceedings and push for an early breakthrough. After almost a month without a home fixture at Plainmoor, United looked to get back to winning ways and secure another important home victory in the race for promotion.

Torquay were firing on all cylinders from the word ‘go’, with every man out there in a yellow jersey doing their job. They were well on top right from the very beginning, and this was soon to pay dividends.

United got their first of the afternoon in the sixth minute after a short free kick from Connor Lemonheigh-Evans found Liam Davis on the left. Davis was able to power down the Dulwich right and tee up top-scorer Jamie Reid in the 18th yard area, who was able to find the bottom corner with a powerful strike that left Dulwich goalkeeper Simon Jorgensen standing on the spot.

Saikou Janneh was able to double the gulls’ advantage in the 15th minute. After some neat play from Kalvin Lumbumbo-Kalala down the right, the ball found its way to Lemonheigh-Evans who was able to square to Janneh who tapped it into an empty net.

Janneh could well have got another just after the half hour mark after he was played through by Kalala down the right. He just couldn’t manage to take it cleanly round the Dulwich keeper, who was able to claim and keep the score at 2-0.

Reid nearly made it 3 in the 44th minute after Lumbumbo-Kalala found him in the area. His effort from close range just went past the post, he was extremely unlucky not to add to his tally.

The fourth official called nine minutes of additional time in the first half due to an injury to referee Marc Whaley, and a budding member of the crowd had to step in.

Janneh got his second of the afternoon, and United’s third, in the 45+1th minute this time perfectly rounding Jorgensen with some real skill and determination and then being able to tap into an empty net once again much like his first goal.

Just on the stroke of half time, defender Sendles-White found himself in the Dulwich penalty area advancing on goal, when he was brought down by Nathan Green and substitute referee Daniel Flynn awarded a penalty. In-form striker Reid stepped up and was able to power home with real conviction, finding the bottom right corner and making it 4-0 to the Yellow Army going into the interval.

Lumbumbo-Kalala made it five soon after the break. After a clever 1-2 exchange between him and Reid on the 56th minute developed, it broke back to him through the centre and his shot was just too powerful for Jorgensen, finding the back of the net.

Dulwich did manage to get one back in the 65th minute after Davis conceded a penalty after fouling substitute Afolabi Akinyemi in the area. Akinyemi stepped up and converted from the spot. It was 5-1 going into the final 25 minutes of the game.

Dulwich got their second soon after the penalty, twenty minutes from time. Dulwich forward Green punished defender Sendles-White after it was his mistake that gifted him the time and space to put it past Shaun MacDonald.

Reid could well have got his hat trick in the dying embers of the match, as well as Torquay’s sixth of the afternoon on the 85th minute. Some neat play in the midfield allowed substitute Frank Vincent, of whom was making his home debut, room to progress into. His cross field pass found Reid, who had both the skill and pace to beat the Dulwich defence, who was unlucky not to score. A finger tipped save from Jorgensen in the Dulwich goal, was enough to deny him his third.

The Gulls now look onwards to Tuesday night where they face East Thurrock United away from home.
