Despite a wide range of films receiving nominations, there has been controversy following the announcements as no one of colour have been nominated in the best actor/actress categories, with Margot Robbie being nominated twice in the same category.

This has led to further diversity row when it was found that the best director nominees are all male and a number of BAME actors, including Cynthia Erivo, had been overlooked despite receiving noms in the recent Golden Globe Awards.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, BAFTA CEO Amanda Berry stated that she agreed that the acting list was ‘very white’ and that it ‘isn’t being disrespectful to anybody who has been nominated because it’s an incredibly strong list this year. If you lok at the director category, where I hoped we would see at least one female director, this is an incredibly strong list when you have people like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino and Sam Mendes, who have got multiple nominations in the past’
