Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola Join Forces to Urge the Premier league to Allow Five Substitutions

Following Manchester City vs Liverpool 1-1 draw, questions were raised by Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola about the five substitution rule.

Pep Guardiola told the BBC, “Around the world, five subs are key, but here it’s totally the opposite. We’ve talked about this many times.”

Jürgen Klopp blames “Lack of leadership.” for the English Premier League being the only big league using three substitutes instead of five.

The three substitution rules has been a big talking point in English football since the start of the season. Due to Covid-19 cutting teams pre season short and the late start to the season, many teams will be playing two or three times a week.

This gives players little rest between training sessions and games, and many managers believe having two extra substitutions will help rotate squads in games to avoid any potential injuries.

Some arguments against the five substitutes rule have been raised, stating that “bigger teams” will benefit more due to more squad depth. However Klopp responded by saying “All the teams have to understand why it’s so helpful. It’s not an advantage, it’s a necessity. 100 per cent,”

After Liverpool and England National Team star Trent Alexander-Arnold went off injured in the game between Manchester City and Liverpool, many people are asking, is it time for the much needed rule change?
