Caoimhin Kelleher: The New Liverpool Number 2?

On Tuesday 1st December 2020, Liverpool faced Ajax in the Champions League, their first team goalkeeper Alisson Becker was not fit enough to start the match. To most Liverpool fans, this meant Adrián would step up to replace him, but not this time. This time it was a chance for the young goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. He kept a clean sheet in Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Ajax and finally got to show Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool fans what he is capable of.

Later in the week on Sunday 6th December 2020, Alisson Becker was out again for Liverpool when they faced Wolves at Anfield. Caoimhin Kelleher was picked over Adrián once again and made his professional debut in the Premier League.

He kept another clean sheet in Liverpool’s huge 4-0 win against Wolves, gaining a lot of praise from pundits and fans.

Could this be the end for Adrián’s career at Liverpool?

Has the 22 year old secured his place as Liverpool’s number two?

With two wonderful performances in his first two games, I think its only right for Caoimhin Kelleher to get the nod over Adrián. Although Adrián has done a lot for Liverpool, having a younger and more determined goalkeeper might be the way forward for Liverpool.

Adrián’s place at Liverpool has been questioned ever since he conceded seven against Aston Villa. Maybe this is the perfect time for Klopp, as he has know found a perfect replacement for a second choice keeper in Caoimhin Kelleher.

It also sounds like Klopp has the same idea due to him saying this in an interview, “I really think Adrián, did for us, a very good job.” The fact that Klopp used the word “did” in past tense only makes Liverpool fans think that his time is over in a Liverpool shirt.

Will he leave?  If so, Where will Adrián go next?

Only time will tell.
