We’re Back!

Varsity is set to return this year, after the pandemic made it impossible for the most anticipated sporting event of the year for both Marjon and Plymouth University to take place.

It’s about bringing people together, having fun and good old fashioned competitive spirit (obviously), which is definitely needed during the current climate. A vast array of sports are on offer over the course of the event, hockey, football, flag football, lacrosse, tennis, netball, basketball, futsal, volleyball and rugby are all there for the taking, but who will reign supreme this year?

As it’s the first time the event is taking place since 2019, it’s set to go off with a blast. Especially considering that Plymouth University have been victorious for the last 7 years. It wasn’t always this way though. Varsity began in 2005, with Marjon winning the first three times on the trot.

Varsity was born as a charity rugby match for both universities to come together to raise money for a good cause, and it’s just grown and grown form that point to where we are today. The money raised for charity is brought in through donations and the sale of tickets, with a different charity being chosen each year.

As one of the biggest sporting events in the city, this years’ varsity return is set to be a big one. Thousands of students either take part or support their establishment, so it really is a good way of bringing people together, especially during these troubled times. Over 500 student athletes are involved in 19 different matches, with the promise of high-spirited competitiveness always on the cards.
