Charity Sports at Marjon

Every week at Marjon is great for sport no matter what team you play for. The social aspect being part of one is integral for a great experience

This week on campus we saw 2 mixed gendered teams competing in charity games,

The first event took place on the Marjon University’s state of the art hockey pitch. Their opponents were the noisy neighbours Plymouth University. There were 2 different matches where both teams fielded 2 separate squads.

                                                   (Mixed Hockey game 1)

Moving onto the first game Marjon dominated the game from the start with great chances being created knocking Plymouth Uni out of shape. Forward Oskar Hinds had great chances to give the Jons the lead however he couldn’t convert. Plymouth Uni started creating better chances as they started pressing up the right flank, however they were just lacking that final pass to put them through on goal.

Marjon’s manager Sam Kerrigan made a 5 minute cameo on the left wing as he struggled for pace and fitness but still put a shift in the trying circumstances.

A few more chances went begging as Annie Hussell was unable to convert a short corner which led to the score being 0-0 at half time.

As the second half commenced Marjon looked to break through as Henry Stirzaker missed a golden opportunity to put the side ahead, however shortly after Oskar Hinds found his form netting past the Plymouth University goal keeper to give Marjon a well deserved lead.

Soon after, Plymouth Uni stuck the pressure back on Marjon as goal keeper Lottie Warne made an impressive double save to keep the clean sheet intact.

Getting let of the hook earlier Marjon decide to make Plymouth University pay with club Captain Oli Large netting the 2nd putting the nail in the coffin for the first fixture giving Marjon a convincing 2-0 victory.

                                                  (Mixed Hockey game 2)

The 2nd fixture started in the worst possible way for the Jons as Plymouth Uni pounce on 2 poor mistakes from the Marjon backline giving them a hard mountain to climb for the 2nd half as they go into half time 2 goals down.

The Jons knew they had a lot of work to do in the second half and they rose to the challenge as Sam Oliver converts a deflected effort which sets the score at 2-1 to the rivals.

Marjon knew that Plymouth Uni were there for the taking as Tommo Faulkner struck home after a well-crafted assist from super sub Drew Clarke to give level the scoreline.

To complete the comeback Marjon went on to score a 3rd as club veteran Scott Andrews setted up Malechi George for a great bottom corner finish.

Finally Marjon and England national team player Sam Taylor scored a top corner finish giving the double header to the Jons.

Both teams deserve a lot of respect for making this event happen and £151 was raised for a fantastic cause.

                                                     (Mixed Netball game)

On Wednesday the Marjon football 4s played the Netball 3rds in a game of Netball. This was a charity match for Sporting Minds. Here is some information about them:

  • “Sporting Minds UK is a registered charity, that seeks to raise awareness and provide support for positive mental health in sports people aged 16 to 30, based in the United Kingdom.
  • Our goal is to create a network and community in which representative young sports people can be open and honest about their mental health, and have a greater awareness for their peers’ mental health. This is done through our website, social media channels, ambassadors, partnerships, training and events”

A fantastic cause for those who want to get involved.

The Netball vs Football game resulted in a dominant display from the home team as the girls scored 5 consecutive goals before as the football team bounced back with goals from Callum Davey and Javin Raj.

However throughout the 4 quarters there was no competition at all as the girls cruised to a 40-8 victory.

Overall a great week for University sport and a substantial amount of money was raised for 2 very important causes which is always a pleasure to see.
