The tragic story of Juice WRLD – Two years on

A recent HBO documentary shows the American rapper’ life prior to his sudden death which was filled with anxiety, drug use and depression.

The documentary shows the struggles of the Chicago rapper’ life but the sheer music talent he had. The ability to freestyle on the spot about anything was what made him an all time great for the Gen Z audience. 

Juice Wrld: Into the Abyss demonstrates how Jarrad Higgins was surrounded by his loved ones throughout his music career. Juice started to become noticed in the music scene in around 2019 at the age of 19 years old. His first mainstream song was ‘Lucid Dreams’ which has totalled 1.8 million streams on spotify. Over his time in the American Hip Hop scene Juice WRLD was one of the fastest growing music artists around. The documentary shows the making of so many big Juice WRLD Hits. This includes “Robbery”, “all girls are the same”, “Burn” and so many more. 

What made the documentary so hard to watch for many was the excessive drug use throughout. It was evident throughout that Juice WRLD had strong addictions to drugs such as “lean” “percocets” “Marijuana” and “Cocaine”. It was evident that Juice used these in his life to help cope with his anxiety and depression.

However, In the early hours of 8 December 2019, less than a week after his 21st birthday, Juice WRLD died of an accidental overdose of oxycodone and codeine shortly after landing at Chicago’s Midway airport.

Two years later, he remains one of the most popular music artists in the world – according to Spotify, the third most streamed in the US of 2021, behind Drake and Taylor Swift – and a beloved icon of a genre whose stars burned bright and too fast.
