Humza Yousaf elected SNP leader

Humza Yousaf has been elected as the new leader of the SNP and First Minister of Scotland. Yousaf had a narrow victory over his opponent Kate Forbes, winning 52.1% of the vote. Yousaf has become the first person of colour to hold these titles as well as coming the first Muslim leader of a European country. As First Minister his main promise is to deliver Scottish Independence from the UK. Scotland voted against leaving the UK in 2014 but now there is a belief within the side of people who wanted to leave the UK that due to Brexit that the Scottish people may have changed there minds.

Some have been critical of Humza Yousaf in the past and are raising concerns around what they perceive as authoritarian behaviour from him, with former UKIP member and poster of the infamous “Nazi Pug” video, Count Dankula, tweeting “The man doesn’t even hide the fact that he’s an outright authoritarian. He was literally the least popular candidate among voters who were not party members. Labour and Tories should call a snap election.”

Scottish Labour and Tories have been critical on the Yousaf’s role as the former Health Secretary saying he mismanaged the NHS in Scotland.

As Yousaf was elected to role of First minister through voting within the SNP it could mean that Scottish Labour and Tories request a snap election in order to be able to put it to the people and see if he can be properly elected to the position
