Price secures another nightly crown in night twelve of the Premier League

Gerwyn Price secured a third nightly win in the Premier League this season, as he took the crown in night twelve in Liverpool.

The Welshman defeated Chris Dobey and Rob Cross before getting the better of Luke Humphries 6-4 in the final.

Speaking to Sky Sports after his latest success, he said: “I just want to make top four. It doesn’t matter whether it’s one, two, three or four as long as I am at the O2 in a few weeks. I managed to get five points today and that eases the pressure. I am playing really well so there is no reason I can’t win every week.”

Price’s run to glory began in the quarter-final, where he faced last week’s winner Chris Dobey. The match started with two holds of throw, which included a 144 out from The Iceman in leg two, before he found the first break in leg three to give himself the advantage. Price then found another ton-plus checkout in leg four, this time a 128. That leg began a run of three straight holds of throw, which when over left The Iceman 4-2 up.

That run of holds was ended by the Welshman in leg seven, the break of throw putting him within a leg of the match. He got the job done efficiently, winning the next leg to secure a comprehensive 6-2 victory, and a place in the semi-finals.

In the other quarter-finals, Luke Humphries beat Nathan Aspinall 6-3, Michael van Gerwen completed an incredible comeback from 4-0 down to beat Luke Littler 6-5, and Rob Cross demolished Stephen Bunting 6-1 in front of his home crowd.

Price was to face another Englishman in the semi-final, in the form of Rob Cross. The Welshman started well, breaking immediately then consolidating with a hold to take the first two legs. Cross took the third leg, but that was to be a rare reprieve for him in the match.

The Iceman took three legs in a row, which included a 110 out in the fourth leg, to put him into a commanding 5-1 lead. Voltage took the seventh leg, but it was only delaying the inevitable, as Price took the next leg, to secure another 6-2 victory, and passage to his fourth final of the season.

In the other semi-final, Luke Humphries fought off another potential Michael van Gerwen comeback to beat the Dutchman 6-4, and move into his sixth nightly final.

The final began relatively evenly, with the first two legs being breaks before the next four were holds to leave the score locked at 3-3. There were two ton-plus outs in the opening exchanges, a 155 out from Humphries in leg three, and a 151 out from Price in leg six.

The Iceman broke the spell of holds in leg seven, breaking before holding in leg eight to put him 5-3 up and on the brink of victory. Humphries held in leg nine, but could not get the break back that he needed to force a final leg, with Price holding firm to secure a 6-4 victory, which confirmed his third Premier League nightly win this year.

Luke Littler remains top, but with a quarter-final exit remains on 30 points. Humphries stays in second, but with a final tonight he moves onto 26 points, and therefore closes the gap to four points.

Price’s win moves the Welshman back to third place, as he breaks 20 points. The top four is rounded out by Nathan Aspinall, who remains on 17 points. The league heads to the Midlands next week, when Birmingham plays host to the action.
