Today a patient who I had previously performed an ankle assessment on came in for treatment. She had been suffering from reduced ROM in dorsiflexion and as a result she was struggling to lunge during work-outs. I performed Wall Test on her which was very poor in comparison to her opposite side and both were below the norm values for ankle dorsiflexion.

To correct this I performed Maitland’s Mobilisations at a grade 3 (large amplitude movement performed into resistance up to the limit of available range), to improve ROM.

Grade 1 and 2 only reduce pain as they don’t reach end-range.

Grade 3 and 4 reach end-range so can be used to improve ROM.

Video on how to perform Maitland’s Mobilisations on the ankle to improve dorsiflexion ROM.
