Today I went through different stretches with my placement supervisor and discussed ways of adapting exercises to suit the client.
An example of this could be adapting a standard hamstring stretch to feeding the chickens or playing row the boat with a child to make it more interactive, engaging and fun. In contrast, to make this more suitable for an elderly individual you could perform the hamstring stretch seated on the edge of the chair and slowly reach forward.
It is important to also adapt how long you hold the stretch for:
- 30 seconds for lengthening soft tissue
- 8-10 seconds for activation stretch
- 30-40 seconds for developmental stretches (Long term affects)
