Reflection:
As it was only a few weeks until my practical STYDO1 exam, today I practiced using the TENS machine and the Ultrasound machine to improve my confidence and technique.
Both are forms of electrotherapy which can be used to treat soft tissue injuries and reduce pain.
When performing ultrasound you must remember 4 key things:
•US Frequency
•Pulsing
•Power
•Time
US Frequency: 1MHz or 3MHz
1MHz = absorbed more rapidly in the tissues therefore is considered to be most appropriate for superficial lesions
3MHz = energy is absorbed less rapidly with progression through the tissues be more effective at greater depth
Pulse ratio:
10%, 20%, 50% or 100% (continuous) – start from 10% and then move up to continuous as you move through the healing stages. Unless its near a bone and then never use continuous (risk of burning the bone)
Acute: 0.1-0.3
Sub-acute: 0.2-0.5
Chronic: 0.3-0.8
Timing: based on the principle that one needs to deliver 1 minutes worth of ultrasound energy (at an appropriate frequency and intensity) for every treatment head that needs to be covered.
