11.03.2020 – Investigation of suspected knee injury in female futsal player

Date: 11.03.2020

Duration: 1400-1500 – 1 hour

Venue: Marjon Sports & Rehab Clinic

Reflective Summary:

This player contacted me over the weekend because she had incurred a suspected knee injury after twisting her right knee externally during an interception of the ball.  She also fell onto her right side.  She felt pain on the medial side of her right knee. The suspected injury occurred on 5/3/20 during a futsal training session. The team coach advised her to come and see me to ensure that the injury was investigated and treated so that the player was fit for Varsity week.

After the training session the player said that the knee was sore with some inflammation and applied the POLICE protocol when she got home.  She has rested from activity since the training session and the player reports no pain or discomfort.  I went through the subjective and objective assessment with her just to ensure that there was no underlying injury.  My clinical impression during the subjective assessment was there may have been possible damage to the medial collateral ligament.  Upon palpation there was no pain or tenderness.  I could not feel or see any inflammation.  I also palpated the joint line of the knee and there was no pain or discomfort.  I could not detect any issues around the knee or behind the knee or in any of the supporting muscles and tendons.

I went through AROM, PROM and resisted ROM movements of flexion, extension, internal and external rotation.  There was no restricted ROM or pain.  I also applied a Valgus stress test, Thessaly’s and both were negative.  It appears that the player had a lucky escape.

She also mentioned that she had tight shoulders.  I had time, so carried out a sports massage of the upper back and shoulders.  The player had trigger points in the Rhomboids on the left and right-hand side of the upper back and in the supraspinatus muscles.  I applied NMT to work them all out.

The player was fit to continue playing futsal and for Varsity.
