Keep learning

The following advice is adapted from that available on the MIND website.

Well this seems like an obvious one if you are a student!  But learning isn’t just about the course you’ve enrolled for.  When you go to University you’re also learning life skills like cooking and shopping on a budget.  There are also lots of opportunities for other kinds of learning and all of these provide a way to continue learning through life – helping to enhance self-esteem and encouraging social interaction and a more active life.

The practice of setting goals, which is related to adult learning in particular, has been strongly associated with higher levels of wellbeing.

Whilst you are at University, why not find other fun ways to learn too? Here are a few more ideas:

  • Find out something about your flatmates – perhaps something they enjoy so that you can suggest a flat activity?
  • Sign up for a student society or sports club
  • Read the news or a book (not just the course ones!)
  • Set up a book club or join the Marjon one (they are on our events page or contact AWeedon@marjon.ac.uk for more info)
  • Do a crossword or Sudoku
  • Research something you’ve always wondered about
  • Learn a new word
  • Start learning a language online
  • Find out what the Student Union do and whether you’d like to volunteer with them

Hopefully there is something in the list above to inspire you to keep learning!  But do also check out our calendar of events to find other activities where you can develop your skills and more importantly, have a break from studies!
