Be active

The following advice is adapted from that available on the MIND website.

Regular physical activity is associated with lower rates of depression and anxiety across all age groups.

Exercise is essential for slowing age-related cognitive decline and for promoting well-being.

But it doesn’t need to be particularly intense for you to feel good – slower-paced activities, such as walking, can have the benefit of encouraging social interactions as well providing some level of exercise.

Today, why not get physical? Here are a few ideas:

  • Take the stairs not the lift
  • Go for a walk at lunchtime – have you found the woods yet?
  • Walk to Uni – perhaps with a flatmate – so you can ‘connect’ as well
  • Get off the bus one stop earlier than usual and walk the final part of your journey to Uni or work
  • Organise a sporting activity
  • Have a kick-about in a local park or book a pitch through the Sports Centre
  • Do some ‘easy exercise’, like stretching, before you leave for Uni in the morning
  • Join Marjon Sports Centre (more info here: https://www.marjon.ac.uk/marjon-sport/) go for a swim or take a class whilst on campus or go deer spotting!
  • Go explore with one of the Plymouth Trails (more info here: https://www.visitplymouth.co.uk/things-to-do/activities/trails) and find out more about the place you are living in whilst you are here

Remember to check out our calendar too for up and coming events this Autumn.  There are lots of opportunities to try a new sport during Freshers and beyond, check out the Marjon Sports Federation activities (here: MSF Activities Times & Description – Freshers copy ) be brave and try a taster.  Or if you not ready to dive into competitive sports for a while – how about taking part in our Santa fun run planned around campus on Wednesday 9th December?  Go to the calendar for the details or contact the SU directly at ledwards@marjon.ac.uk or jlynch@marjon.ac.uk for the fun run or LWest@marjon.ac.uk for info on the Sports Federation activities.
