First client is a 18 year old female who goes to the gym 4 times a week.
Second is a 18 year old male who plays water polo and regularly swims.

Before the massage starting the client explained that they did leg day at the gym the day before and said that their hamstrings were sore. Because of this they asked to have the hamstrings massaged, this started off by making sure the towelling techniques were correct. The towel was tucked into the bottoms of their shorts, so they had privacy and no lotion got onto them. The massage consisted of effleurage techniques and petrissage. There was a knot in both hamstrings and neuromuscular techniques were applied to help release the knots. The client was told that the pain scale was 0 to 10, 0 being no pain at all and 10 being unbearable pain. As the technique was applied the client said that the pain was around a 4 so more pressure was applied until it was at a 6. It was then held for 30 seconds until the pain subsided.

The second client was saying that they had upper back tightness. To help with this effleurage was given to the upper fibres of the traps, this was to help blood flow. After was the petrissage techniques to help with getting into the deeper muscle fibres. Neuromuscular techniques were used to help get release the tension within the traps.

Remember to keep talking to client throughout the massage and to gain as much information from the client before the massage starts. This would help to understand what the client wants, and needs are. Remember to do stretching at the end of a massage to help ease tension within the muscles.

In this session the client was a 18 year old male who used to play rugby for a total of four years and hasn’t played for two years due to an injury on their ankle.

The client said before the massage was done that they wanted a back massage as they had tight upper traps and that it had been going on for about 2 weeks. Towelling techniques were used, this was to make the client feel more comfortable and to protect their clothing, the towel was placed over their legs and tucked into the back of the clients shorts to make sure that no lotions get into the clothing. Effleurage was given to the upper fibres of traps this included the muscles in the back of the neck. After they were warmed up petrissage was done to the traps this include kneading, this was to get into the muscle fibres deeper to help with the knots in the muscles and to help blood flow.

Do neuromuscular techniques to help with knots in the traps which will make the knots smaller, stretching techniques could have also been used at the end of the session.

19 year old male rugby player who plays rugby once a week and has training two times a week.

A 19 year old rugby player came into the client with sore glutes this had happened when they did leg day at the gym with a friend two days prior to the appointment. Because of the sore glutes the client stated that it can be tricky to sit down and back up. To help with the recovery of the glutes a soft tissue massage was given, this includes effleurage, petrissage and tapotements. Neuromuscular techniques were applied to the knots that were found within the glutes, this was to help the client feel less tension. After this METs were applied the technique used was PIR this was to help stretch the muscles. When this was done the range of motion was tested, unfortunately it was not tested before using these techniques. Because of this there wasn’t any way to tell it they actually improved their range of motion.

Range of motion was not tested before the session started because of this it was not clear that the techniques that were used worked for their range of motion. In future the range needs to be tested in order to see if it has worked and how well it has worked.

20 year old male who plays lacrosse once a week with training twice a week for 2 hours.

In this two hour session the client was explaining that they were experiencing stiffness in the neck and the upper fibres of traps. Range of motion was tested before giving any treatment to see if after the session the range of movement had improved. Their range was limited in side flexion of the neck on the right side this could be due to them being right handed and is the side they use to throw the ball in lacrosse. A massage was given to the client by using effleurage, petrissage and neuromuscular techniques. Trigger point were used in this session this is to help improve the range of motion from the client. This is done by applying pressure onto the muscle while it is relaxed which was the right side of the upper trap. The client then moved their head to the opposite side, this done when the trigger point went from their neck down to the shoulder to get the whole upper trap. After this was done their range of motion was tested for the second time and it had improved on both sides.

Be more confident when applying new techniques on clients, this includes talking more to the client to explain what the techniques will be doing and how they will help.

Client massaged was a 18 year old male who plays water polo and swims on average 3 times a week.

Before a massage was given the client explained that their gastrocnemius was sore after doing swimming the day before. This was on both legs, so to start off effleurage was done to both legs then petrissage was applied. During this part of the massage the client told me that their left leg was sorer than their right. Because their left leg was more sore the massage was lighter on that leg this is because putting too much pressure on the leg could have been painful. During the massage the knee was flexed so it was easier to massage the soleus with the gastrocnemius being relaxed.

Ask clients which side of the body they have more pain in before giving a massage so it is known which side will be more tender while giving the massage and it will help to know how long to spend on each leg. At the end of the massage stretching could have been done to help stretch the muscle.

Before the session started the client was complaining of tight hamstrings and gastrocnemius. Massage was given to both legs to help loosen and stretch the muscles.

Before the massage was given the station had to be set up ready for the clients arrival. The set up included putting the couch roll on the bed and getting the lotion ready for use. The bed was readjusted when the client was laying on it. Towelling techniques were used this was done by covering their shorts to protect them from lotions. The massage started off with effleurage techniques this included stroking techniques. This is used to warm the muscles up before using petrissage, petrissage was used on the muscles this is to get into the deeper muscle tissue. A couple of the techniques that were used is wringing and kneading.

Have more confidence when massaging new clients and speak up more when giving massage. This includes asking if the pressure is too hard or gentle.

Client is a 18 year old female who enjoys swimming and also goes to the gym a few times a week.

Client said that they were experiencing upper back pain, due to this a postural assessment was done by doing this it was visible that they had kyphosis and that their right shoulder was higher than their left which could be due to tightness in the right upper fibres of the traps. To help treat this massage was used, starting with effleurage then leading into petrissage to help get rid of the knot in their traps. Knots were found in their upper traps and they were tight this is probably from stress as the client mentioned that they were stressed about university work during the massage.

Teach the client different ways to help with stress. Testing range of motion should have been done before the massage was given.

Client is an 18 year old female who swims regularly and goes to the gym twice a week.

Client has lower back pain and had said they were experiencing tightness in that area. A postural assessment was done before the massage, this showed that the clients right shoulder was higher than the left, they also had slight kyphosis. This could be due to poor posture while sitting at desks. Effleurage was given at the beginning of the massage to warm the muscle fibres and to loosen them. When erythema happened petrissage was used, this was to get into the deeper tissue of the erector spinea muscle. Tapotements were used to help stimulate nerve endings and local circulation. A few techniques used were hacking, beating, and cupping.

Make sure that the right amount of lotion is used, this could be done by applying an amount on the back of the hand. If more lotion is needed then use what is put on the back of the hand rather than go to the station to get more lotion during the massage.

First client was a 26 year old male who goes to the gym 5 times a week.
Second client was a 18 year old female who enjoys swimming a few times a week.

For the first session it was an hour long. The client was complaining of shoulder and pectoral pain due to them using weights in the gym. A postural assessment was made on the client and they had slight kyphosis, this was done by just eye balling it and looking at their posture from different angles. Effleurage was given to the client on both of their pecs, this was to increase the blood flow to the area and to warm up the muscle fibres. Once the skin was red and warm petrissage was used this was done by using techniques such as kneading and wringing, this was to get deeper into the pectorals. After the pecs were done the deltoids were massaged using the same techniques to help with their recovery.

In the second session the client said they had sore glutes and lower back pain so this two hour session started off by using effleurage techniques on their glutes warming it up and then petrissage to get deeper into the glute to help with the soreness. After a glute massage was given a back massage was done this is focusing on mainly their lower back to help with the tightness.

Use different ways to check the clients posture to try new ways to do it and to also get used to using equipment’s alongside using eye balling. Try doing range of motion before starting massage so when testing if the massage has improved their range of motion it can be easily noticed. Another improvement to be made is to make sure that a postural assessment is done on both clients as only the first client had one done to them and not the second.

Foot massage given to a 58 year old female who runs around 4 times a week.

For the foot massage I got the client to lay on their front so the foot would be easier to reach and massage. As the foot is a smaller surface area and the skin is tougher the thumbs were used to massage the area. The massage started off with effleurage to allow the area to warm up by increasing the blood flow. After the skin felt warm to touch the knuckles were used to get into the foot deeper but making sure the pressure was not too hard. The knuckles used were to help get rid of the knots that was in the foot going over the same areas until the tension in the knot went down to relieve pressure.

No range of motion tests were performed in this massage as it was not taught at this stage. Remember to put a bolster underneath the clients ankles to support their legs more so their ankles don’t hyper extend.
