THE ASCENT OF KILIMANJARO

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a myth, a dream for some. With its 5,895 meters above sea level , it offers at its summit eternal snows and glaciers.

the Kilimanjarosits on Africa, it is one of the achievements of trekkers belonging to the list of 7 Summits. The ascent of Kilimanjaro remains an adventure that deserves the effort of several days of walking. There are obviously ways, easier than others to get to the Uhuru Peak, but even the easiest routes (Machame route) require some training.

This remains relative to everyone’s physical condition, but an ascent like that can not be improvised. In this article our local expert gives you the keys to prepare for the ascent and to know everything about this giant.

The different ascents

The Machame Way

Our local agency proposes the climb by the way Machame, reputed to be the most adapted to the acclimatization. Another positive point about the selection of this route is that the ascent and descent are made by 2 different routes , that is to say you will discover new landscapes for the duration of the trek. From the equatorial rainforest to Machame Gate, from the rocky plateau to the lunar landscapes of Barafu, to the glacial summit of Uhuru Peak.

This way is quite wild and the accommodation is under tent . This adventure side will seduce a lot of people.

As for the conditions of ascent, in total this route is 60 kilometers. It takes about 6 hours of walking a day , except the last two days where respectively it will be necessary to walk 10 hours and 7 hours. The elevations range from + 730 meters to + 1200 meters per day.

The Marangu Way

The Marangu Way is the classic way of trekking . It is known to be easier and shorter (it is only 20 km), so it is more crowded than the Machame route.

It is the only lane equipped with shelters all along the route. By this route it will take a total of 5 days of trekking.

You will discover a rich flora, fruit trees, ferns, waterfalls … It takes 5-6 hours of walking a day , except the penultimate day where it will persevere for 10 hours.

The Rongaï way

It is the only road approaching the mountain by the North. It takes 6 days with this route to reach the summit. The trail starts along the Kenyan border, while the return is via the Marangu route.

This climbing route of Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most untouched , and offers wildlife . It also makes it possible to climb the summit of Kilimanjaro far from the “crowds”.

Level of difficulty and acclimation

It takes between 5 to 10 days of walking to complete this trekking, depending on your level and the route selected. I often remind trekkers that it must be kept in mind that Kilimanjaro remains a sporting challenge , with temperatures at the summit ranging from -5 ° to -20 ° C , not to mention the lack of oxygen due to the altitude . I advise to drink well (2.5 liters / day) , to protect yourself against the sun and to take your time. The energy saved the first days of walking you will be essential to reach the summit.

Altitude-related diseases include acute mountain sickness. It is related to the decrease of oxygen pressure in the ambient air (hypoxia) and consequently to the lack of oxygen pressure in our blood (hypoxemia). Headaches, digestive disorders, vomiting, disorientation, vertigo … These symptoms often occur at the beginning of the altitude stay during the acclimation phase. Your guide is trained in mountain first aid, and a decompression chamber will be available throughout the climb, as well as oxygen tanks . For more information on altitude related diseases, you can refer to Ifremmont’sspecialized website .

It should not be forgotten that this is a physical climb, with 6 hours of walking a day and significant elevation changes. As previously explained, the Machame route with a 7-day itinerary allows better acclimatization . Thus, by putting all the chances on his side and with training, the summit of Kili is yours!

Climbing conditions

Regardless of the number of participants, a French speaking guide is present throughout the climb. It is an essential framework for the smooth running of the trek. Our guides are professionals who are trained to accompany you and help you reach the top in the best arrangements. A very thorough briefing is done before departure, trust him and listen to his advice , he will be with you all the climb. It is also the one that sets the pace, which brings good humor and encouragement to motivate and solidarize the group.

In addition to the guide, there will be one or more assistant guides, a team of porters (1 porter per person) and one or more cooks. Camping equipment in individual or 2-person tents as well as tables, chairs, dining room tents, foam mattresses will be provided.

Ascension requires optimal security conditions. Know that your guide is trained in mountain first aid, in case of difficulty he knows how to intervene. He will have in his possession a satellite phone to ensure communication between the mountain and the base in Arusha. As previously explained, a decompression chamber will be available throughout the climb, as well as oxygen cylinders.
