The programs aim, is to provide nourishment and informal education to children, young people and their families on the importance of making healthier choices in pursuit of realising their full potential. The program promotes the five recommended daily intakes of fruit and vegetables, however, the program encourages more than just the fruit and veg choices (see our nutritional chart as just a guideline) including the other essential vitamins the human body requires, and our other five core messages which make up the 5+5 a day:
-
Hand Washing
-
Mental Health
-
Exercise – Hydration & Sleep
-
Nutrition – The Kit Bag Project (tackling obesity)
-
Climate Change – Sustainability (‘dome to dish & tunnel to table program’)
The 5+5 a day programme’s framework is built on an evidence-based approach first implemented in New Zealand. During my studies, coupled with analyzing community profiles I was able to explore and identify the other needs within communities. Therefore, in response I adapted the programme accordingly. For example, climate change and sustainability are two of the other key components, including hand washing, with the latter becoming an integral part of our daily routines.
