Rule of 5:

The vision of the 5+5 a day and The Kit Bag Project has always been to, nourish and educate socially disadvantaged children, families, and the wider communities to make better choices. However, with poverty on the increase during these unprecedented times and the anticipated ramifications still to be endured, it was important that the Kit Bag Project be implemented without haste to tackle holiday hunger.

Therefore, we thought rather than food banks and community groups just distributing bags of food to those in need, they would also provide menus and recipes to support families in the preparation of healthier meals with the foods allocated to them and achieving at least 2 of their 5+5 a day because the kit bags are reusable.

The healthier recipes are developed from existing products held at the foodbank and contain no added sugar and the meals are low in sodium with no added salt.

These will then be added on a lanyard which can then be worn while the families are preparing their meal. The project will run initially for a 5-week period and the recipes will rotate every 5 weeks. Families will be provided with new recipes based on what is available at any given foodbank there will be additional cards on the lanyards with details of the 5+5 a day other core messages. Families will be encouraged to take photos of the food they have prepared, then upload them to the foodbank who provided the food parcels social media platforms and the plymouthhelpaneighbour.co.uk platform managed by the 5+5 a day CIC. Therefore, sharing their experience with the community and other people keen to learn about healthier options and in many cases teaching other people how to cook.

For the families who do not receive a lanyard there will be a QR code available to scan at the food bank site which will then take the people using the barcode to a sharing platform where they can access all of the 5+5 a day resources.  Supporting children and communities of all ages, ‘from cradle to grave’ and supporting our NHS are my driving force. The KBP will enable me and the CIC to use the project as a vehicle to promote any other central messages home to families and support them in achieving their 5+5 a day.

To fund the program, businesses will pay an annual fee to carry the eye catching 5+5 a day logo on their products, therefore, through the marketing campaign the products will carry brand awareness, this in turn, will encourage the public to purchase that product safely in the knowledge that the funds raised will be used to provide relief for those in need and providing their business a superior edge over their competitors.
