What is Twitter?
Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that allows users to broadcast short posts (280 characters max) called Tweets. It is used by individuals, businesses, organisations and can be a useful tool to use in Higher Education.

Twitter tools and features
- Tweet – join or start a conversation with a tweet
- Retweet – if you see a tweet you like, retweet it to spread the word
- Post replies and mentions
- Include photos and videos (2 minutes 20 seconds)
- Follow – follow accounts to see all their tweets
- Search for specific tweets, accounts or ongoing conversations
- Hashtag – add a hashtag before a relevant keyword or phrase in your tweet to categorise the tweet and allow it to show more easily in Twitter search
- Connect tab – general suggestions to connect you with accounts that might be of personal interest to you
- Twitter polls – vote in a poll or create your own poll
