A YEAR on from that infuriating thigh injury he sustained at Charlton Athletic, defender Scott Wootton is determined to move on and make his mark in the Argyle team.
“I’ve said earlier on this season; last season was my worst by a mile in my career so far – for a number of different reasons. I want to forget that now,” said Wootton. “This season has been a good start personally and I just want to keep it going now. Keep winning games, helping the team, contributing and doing the best I can for the club.”
Improvement is the name of the game for ‘Wootts’ and the sky’s the limit as far as development for him in an Argyle shirt is concerned.
“I wouldn’t say I’ve reached my best yet but I just want to keep improving, working with the staff and keep improving on certain elements of my game,” he said.
Although last season was one to forget for Argyle’s No.5, Scott is playing with renewed belief and enjoyment under boss Ryan Lowe.
“I’m playing with confidence, enjoying my football again, which I wasn’t doing last year,” he said. “That’s probably one of the biggest things, more confidence.”
Focused on his role to play this season, Wootton has emphasised his desire to push on and feels like he’s flourishing in his new position in the back three.
He said: “I enjoy it. For a lot of my career I’ve played right-back, so I feel comfortable in the wider position, both with and without the ball. I’ve played there a couple of times before at previous clubs, so I feel fine there.”
Buoyed by his new position, Scott was eager to point out how Lowe’s attacking style of football has helped him defensively.
“That’s the manager’s style and we’ve all bought into that,” said Scott. “Expansive, attacking football. As a defender, I want to get the balance right, keep clean sheets. Teams who keep clean sheets will always win games, especially with the talent we’ve got in this team.”
A renewed Scotty and his Pilgrim team-mates now turn their attention to the visit of Scunthorpe United in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday.
