Makoto Yukimura’s highly acclaimed manga series Vinland Saga is finally having its second season air after 3 and half years of waiting. This season will be adapting the “Farmland arc” which is regarded as one of the best arcs in the history of manga.
Vinland Saga is set during the Viking period of history, where elements of the time period are used to help push parts of the story forwards without outright following the history of the real world. Due to this it means some of the characters featured in Vinland Saga were an actual part of history such as the explorer Leif Ericcson, the brutish Thorkell the Tall and the young Prince Canute.
The key and most interesting dynamic in Vinland Saga season 1 is the one between main character Thorfinn and Viking leader Askeladd. Thorfinn meets Askeladd when he was 6 years old as Askeladd’s gang is hired to assassinate Thorfinn’s father Thors, and after murdering Thors, Thorfinn is captured and vows revenge against Askeladd so the dynamic of boy being raised by his father’s killer creates many interesting scenarios throughout the first season.
Vinland Saga season 1 was well animated by Studio Wit and despite a change in studio ahead of the second season it is largely the same team that worked on season 1 just working for studio MAPPA instead who animate other highly regarded anime such as Attack on Titan, Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen so the animation is very much in safe and capable hands.
The music in Vinland Saga frequently manages to perfectly capture the emotional essence of each scene where it further immerses you in the world and the drama of the characters thanks to the work of composer Yutaka Yamada.
Now is a good time to begin Vinland Saga as the second season begins airing. You can use streaming services such as Netflix and Crunchyroll to gain access to Vinland Saga.
