Wales manager Robert Page was left fuming after refereeing errors denied his team three points against Turkey in their European Championship qualifier at Cardiff City Stadium.
Wales were held to a draw, in very controversial fashion. After taking an early lead via Neco Williams, Wales were denied a chance to double their lead after the referee dismissed an arguably obvious foul inside the box on Brennan Johnson.
Page said: “The defender has got the wrong side of him; he runs into him and takes him out, it’s a stonewall penalty.”
To add to Wales’s woes a very soft penalty was later given to Turkey in the second half which was converted by Yusuf Yazıcı.
Page stated: “We have conceded the softest penalty we’ll ever concede” regarding the incident.
When asked: “Do you win that game if it was a different referee?” Page responded: “I believe so.”
Wales have now failed to qualify in traditional fashion for the Euros. They now focus on the play-offs to keep their dream of qualification alive.
This said, the game has once more raised questions over the competence of match officials and how incorrect decisions continue to be a frequent occurrence. Especially when they have VAR available.
