Plymouth Argyle fought back from a goal down not once but twice as they gained a hard earned point against high flying Watford.
The Yellows opened the scoring in the eighth minute with an effort bundled over the line by inform Yakoun Issouf Bayo, and the reaction from the away fans seemed delayed leading to what has been described as “one of the strangest celebrations to a goal” that has ever been seen.
It only took 15 minutes for the Greens to reply with Gray scoring his first with a delicate “Van Persie esque” volley following a brilliant cross field pass from Gibson.
However, Ryan Porteous ensured the Hornets would not be denied a half time lead, and converted a Mattie Pollock cross to put Watford back in the lead on the 41st minute.
The second half was a frustrating one with both sides failing to convert big chances. Watford could have wrapped up the game as Larouci broke from midfield and fed Bayo, but Daniel Grimshaw did well to block the Ivorian’s effort.
Callum Wright replaced a limping Whittaker, and himself had a great chance where he shot wide following some fine footwork.
The Watford faithful must’ve thought their side had the game wrapped up, but when Mustapha Bundu laid the ball to Andre Gray he curled in a superb effort from 18 yards to send Home Park into bedlam.
You can never count out Rooney’s Argyle, who have now scored five 90+ minute goals in the league so far this season.
The point lifted Argyle up to 17th, while Watford – managed by Rooney’s former Manchester United team-mate Tom Cleverley – moved up to fifth.
Plymouth Argyle head coach Wayne Rooney told BBC Sport:
“I’m delighted in the end to get a point, I think Watford are a very good team, a very powerful team.
“I thought the lads who came on made a difference again, which is really important for us, and in the end we deserved a point.”
