Many years on from their first TV appearance, Dick and Dom are still some of the most well known TV personalities in the UK.
The pair rose to fame with their double BAFTA award winning show ‘Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow’ which aired on Saturday and Sunday mornings on CBBC Channel, BBC One and BBC Two, and ran from 2002 to 2006 lasting for 5 series. After their success with the show Dick and Dom became reoccurring faces on the CBBC Channel on shows like: The Legend of Dick and Dom, Absolute Genius with Dick and Dom, Diddy TV and most notably Splatalot!
Through their shows Dick and Dom remained household names from the late 1990s to 2018, though after their last TV show, Diddy TV, they took their career in a new direction when they began extensive work in radio/podcasting. Their first radio show was aired on BBC Radio 1 in 2007, in the middle of their TV career, however it took a backseat as their show ‘Are You Smarter than a 10 Year old?’ released in early 2007. The two presenters began to focus on radio/podcasting from 2019 through to present day, seemingly leaving TV behind as they worked on: Cash from Chaos (2019), The Dick and Dom Debate (2020) and presenting on Virgin Radio UK every Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Their 27 year long career has also evolved into the duo partnering with student unions doing DJ sets at universities across the country; the most recent and notable one for me, as I was there, was ‘Dick and Dom in Da Gingerbread House’ held at Falmouth/Exeter University’s Penryn campus in which they performed their set in a life sized gingerbread house. One student that went to the event said “It was weird seeing them in real life, especially after not hearing about or seeing them on TV for a long time, I think the last time I saw them was on splatalot when I was a kid.”
These performances led to Dick and Dom entering the festival scene and eventually to other gigs namely their shows at the Eden project and on P&O cruises, both in 2019, as well as them beginning their own tour ‘Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow: LIVE!’ in 2023).
Over the years, mainly after 2017 when the pair began to focus on radio and in person shows, people began to speculate as to what happened to the dynamic duo. Richard ‘Dick’ McCourt commented that “Projects have been stopped because they just say, ‘You’re the guys who stood in a small house and yelled bogies’” and that “It’s hard for a lot of people to move on from it, when we know we can do other things.” When asked about their ‘disappearance’ from presenting TV. This speculation ended in 2023 when it was announced that the pair were hosting a live tour ‘Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow: LIVE’ this saw now grown fans grabbing for tickets to se the revamping of their favourite childhood show.
But what comes next for these two? With no mention of retirement and events lined up for the coming year, many are left wondering if the pair will ever return to TV or if they will continue their careers as travelling DJs.
