Three Lions beat Wales to begin October camp in style

Yesterday England defeated Wales 3-0 in a friendly at Wembley.

First half goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins and Bukayo Saka were the difference as the Three Lions got their October camp off to a great start.

It wasn’t long after the kick-off that the fans were treated to a big moment. Antony Gordon flashed a shot across goal within a minute, from which England won a corner. The ball in was not a great one, and it looked as if it would run out of play.

Marc Guehi had other ideas however. He did very well to keep it in play, before playing the ball across to the unmarked Morgan Rogers, who slotted it into the back of the net. It was the perfect start for England, who found themselves ahead within the first three minutes.

Things were to get even better for the hosts on the 11th minute. They had another corner, which was dealt with at first by Wales, but eventually found Saka on the opposite flank. He recycled the ball back into the box, eventually finding Morgan Rogers. He flashed the ball across goal, and it was tapped home by Ollie Watkins to double the advantage for England.

The misery was only to get worse for Wales. Antony Gordon received the ball at around the halfway line, and managed to break past the Welsh defence before a good attacking run left them vulnerable.

The ball found Elliot Anderson, who took a stab at goal which was comfortably blocked, but England recycled, eventually finding Bukayo Saka on the edge of the box. He worked his way free of the defence, and unleashed a wonderful effort, which sailed into the top corner, making it 3-0 to the Three Lions within the first twenty minutes.

England were absolutely fantastic in the first half, and things nearly got even better on the 40th minute. They managed to find a ball through the Welsh defenders, which Elliot Anderson was able to latch onto. He flashed it across goal, finding Ollie Watkins, who simply had to tap it in from two yards.

The touch came off his shin however, which meant that the shot ended up going wide of the target. In the process of trying to reach the ball, Watkins collided with the post, ending up injured and nearly having to come off.

That miss was the last action of any note in an incredible first half for the Three Lions, who had blown away their Welsh counterparts.

The second half would be a much quieter affair. The first moment of note in the half came on the 51st minute. England had a corner, which was played short, eventually finding Morgan Rogers. He had a bit of space so decided to take on the shot, but the crossbar prevented him from grabbing his second of the afternoon.

Wales managed to find some attacking threat four minutes later, as a cross was floated towards the back post where an unmarked David Brooks was waiting. The shot was aimed straight at Jordan Pickford however, and the follow up header from Kieffer Moore went over, so England remained unscathed.

The Welsh were starting to find a few more opportunities going forward, and their next relatively big effort came on the 76th minute. A nice floated cross found the head of substitute Mark Harris, and his effort was a good one, but he couldn’t keep it on target, and it flashed just over the bar.

That was the last action of any note in an all together dry second half, with England seeing out the last 15 minutes or so comfortably, to record a 3-0 win and a clean sheet over their rivals, and get their October camp off to the perfect start.
