Viktor Gyokeres scores twice as Arsenal annihilate Atletico Madrid

Arsenal score another two goals from set pieces and Viktor Gyokeres breaks his 8 game goal drought by netting twice as Arsenal dismantle Atletico Madrid at the Arsenal Stadium on Tuesday night.

Arsenal nearly had the dream start to the match, with Ebere Eze’s shot taking a wicked deflection and looping onto the crossbar, Declan Rice couldn’t find the target from the follow up, his attempt on the half volley flew just above the crossbar.

Arsenal had a goal ruled out in the 35th minute of the match, some good work from Zubimendi in midfield, dispossessing Nico, led to him finding saka out wide, his low cross found Gabriel Martinelli who tapped the ball home, however he had strayed offside. 

Contrary to the first half, In the second it was Atletico who made a great start, Julian Alvarez’s superb curling effort from just outside the box had David Raya beaten, however it cannoned off the crossbar

However Atletico couldn’t capitalise on there good start to the half, as it was Arsenal who broke the deadlock in the 57th minute, Declan Rice’s inviting ball from a free kick found the head of none other than Gabriel who headed home Arsenals 9th goal from a set piece this season. 

Atletico had a huge opportunity for an instant response, Julian Alvarez’s clever ball found Giuliano Simeone whose shot was blocked by Gabriel, the Brazilian center half making the difference at both ends of the pitch. 

Arsenal doubled there lead in the 64th minute, an excellent solo run from Myles Lewis Skelly, that started from in his own half caused problems for the Atletico defence, he teed up Gabriel Martinelli who curled the ball into the bottom right corner to give Arsenal a 2 goal advantage.

The disaster continued for Atletico Madrid, Zubimendis intricate pass found Gabriel Martinelli on the left hand side, who crossed the ball into Eze, his shot fell perfectly at the feet of Viktor Gyokeres who bundled the ball into the back of the net for Arsenals third goal in the space of ten minutes, a rather scrappy goal but Gyokeres won’t care.

Gyokeres doubled his tally for the evening just minutes after scoring his first, Declan Rices corner was headed back across goal by Gabriel and Gyokeres was in the right place at the right time to tap home for the Gunners. After going 10 hours without scoring a goal, Gyokeres scored two in two minutes, like London buses as they say… 

The victory for Arsenal maintains there 100% start to this seasons Champions League, and leaves them third in the table.

Arsenal have now won 6 games In a row in all competitions.

On the other hand, for Atletico this was there 2nd defeat of the Champions League phase in there 3rd game, leaving them 18th in the table.

The 4-0 defeat for Atletico equals there heaviest ever defeat in a Champions League match, certainly a night to forget for Atleti and Diego Simeone.
