Darting drama as Smith reaches quarter-finals of Grand Slam

Michael Smith has beaten Chris Dobey 10-9 to reach the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.

Smith was 5-2 down early in the encounter, before coming back to 5-5 with a brilliant 164 checkout.  The former world champion was first to have match darts when he had a 9-8 lead, but Dobey fought back and had the throw in the decider.

At this point it was clear the pressure was getting to the players, as both struggled to hit that winning double. Dobey had 11 match darts in a dramatic last leg. Before the “Bully Boy” prevailed, when he pinned double 4 on his 10th match dart.

Smith will now face current world number one Luke Humphries in the quarter finals Who comfortably won his game 10-3 vs Jurjen van der Velde, averaging nearly 109 along the way.

Gerwyn Price and Ricky Evans also advanced to the quarter finals. “The Iceman” won 10-6 against Martin Schindler. While “Rapid” defeated Luke Woodhouse 10-9.

Price and Evans will now face off in the last eight. With the rest of the round of 16 games set to take place this evening.
