Spurs’ skipper Christian Romero’s heroics save a point for Frank’s side at St James Park.
A second-half goal fest led to the points being shared between the two European contenders. Bruno Guimaraes’ and Anthony Gordon’s efforts were cancelled out by a spectacular brace by Romero, stopping a 3-game losing streak.
The first half was controlled by the home side, with Joelinton connecting with the post being the highlight of the forty-five. A cagey affair continued throughout, with no side showing any type of clinical instinct.
Newcastle came out of the blocks raring, with Gordon driving through a weak Spurs backline, only to draw a great save by Vicario, yet signalling a second forty-five full of action.
The breakthrough came through Bruno, who struck a curling strike from the corner of the area into the top-right corner. It was Gordon again who was exploiting the space down the left-hand channel and delivered a tempting ball to Nick Woltemade, who flicked it back to the Brazilian.
Following a triple substitution, it was a reasonably quick fightback by the European champions, with a failed clearance falling to Mohammed Kudus, whose low flighted delivery was headed home by Romero.
Anthony Gordon delivered from the spot after a lengthy VAR check, showing Rodrigo Bentancur’s impediment on Dan Burn resulted in a spot kick.
Spurs’ pressure was eventually rewarded in stoppage time, with Aaron Ramsdale’s punch high in the sky falling on the boot of Romero once again, with an acrobatic effort falling through a crowd of players, rescuing a point for the away side.
This ends Spurs’ losing streak, and keeps them level on points, sitting at 11th and 12th, respectively.
