The Media We Consume, the Art We Create: How Media Inspires Aspiring Creators

Media plays a major role in shaping creativity, especially for young adults. More than just entertainment, TV shows, books, films, and music often spark ideas and influence personal creative projects by exposing audiences to new perspectives and styles

It is appealing because due to being easy to access and relatable. It introduces people to different cultures, experiences, and emotions, often leading to moments of creative inspiration and new ways of thinking.

What we consume also shapes how people create their own work. Writers, artists, and designers often pick up techniques, storytelling methods, or visual styles from the media they enjoy and admire.

Many young adults are inspired by the artists themselves. Seeing creators share their process and take creative risks encourages self-expression and helps individuals develop their own voice.

On this topic Olivia, an 18 year old playwright from Penzance said: “People go to media because they want to imitate, imitation is the greatest form of flattery.”

Adding to this, Grace a 20 year old first year student at the University of Brighton studying creative writing said: “There is this pressure to keep creating because there’s so much media out there, it almost ends up feeling like you’ve got to scream in a crowded room just to get anyone to notice.”
