Liverpool travelled to Craven Cottage on Sunday, where they drew 2-2 against Fulham following late goals from Cody Gakpo and Harrisson Reed.
The Reds had a slow start to the game, creating few chances and conceding in the 18th minute, which saw them go into half-time 1-0 down.
The second half was slightly better for the Merseyside team, as a controversial Florian Wirtz equaliser was allowed by VAR. Gakpo then went on to score in the 95th minute to make it 2-1 for Liverpool; however just two minutes later, Harrisson Reed scored an absolute screamer from outside the box, allowing Fulham to come away with a point.
Arne Slot defended his tactics, which have been heavily criticised all season, after journalists commented on his play style, saying Liverpool often sat too deep and didn’t create enough chances.
The Reds’ gaffer said: “If you play with the amount of midfielders that we play with, and with only one attacker against the 5-4-1 of Fulham, then I don’t know if you can expect us to create chance after chance, but overall I think we created enough chances to win the game.”
“I didn’t change as a manager, I would like to play with eight attackers, but if those eight attackers don’t defend enough, then it is hard to win a game of football.”
Liverpool were without three senior attackers for the match in the capital, as Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike were injured and Mo Salah was away at AFCON. The absentees meant that Gakpo had to start at striker, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz had to start out of position on the wing. However, Rio Ngumoha and Frederico Chiesa, who are both wingers, started on the bench, much to the fans’ disapproval.
Supporters have taken to social media to express their frustration towards the manager and his tactics, with many fans calling for Slot to be sacked.
Fans have also complained about the lack of gametime given to players such as Ngumoha and Chiesa, who have both been given very limited minutes this season.
The reds face their toughest game of the season so far on Thursday, when they will travel back to London to play Arsenal at the Emirates.
