Stephen Bunting could be forgiven for breathing a huge sigh of relief after being named in the newly announced Premier League Darts line-up — a decision that even surprised some inside the sport.
Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle admitted he was taken aback by Bunting’s inclusion, suggesting the Liverpool thrower may have ridden his luck after an inconsistent spell on the big stage. For Bunting, though, it represents a fresh opportunity to prove he belongs among the elite week in, week out.
There was disappointment elsewhere, with Danny Noppert and Ryan Searle both missing out despite strong runs on the PDC circuit, highlighting just how ruthless the selection process can be.
The eight-player Premier League lineup, is Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Jonny Clayton, Luke Littler, Stephen Bunting, Gian van Veen and Josh Rock.
The action gets underway on Thursday 6 February, as the Premier League roadshow begins its 17-week journey across Europe.
