Exeter City faced Birmingham City on Tuesday in an exciting League One clash at St James Park. Despite a determined effort from the home side, Birmingham emerged victorious with a 2-0 win, underlining their strength as promotion contenders this season. Ex Exeter loanee Jay Stansfield was once again on the scoresheet for the blues converting a penalty against his former club. Exeter fan Leon Brook said if Jay still played for the Grecians, then this season could be completely different but wasn’t devastated when he scored to give Birmingham their second goal of the game.
The defeat leaves Exeter in mid-table, with challenges ahead as they aim to regain consistency. They play League 2 side Chesterfield in their next game in the second round of the FA Cup which Exeter fans are confident they can get a win in the game and progress to the next round of the competition. Leon, while giving praise to the Spireites for their form in the league so far sitting at eighth place in the table, thinks his team will comfortably win 2-0 and progress to the next round.
Gary Caldwell’s men sit in 11th in the league as it stands with seven wins two draws and seven losses, after finishing 13th in the table last season fans are so far content with how the season has panned out, however, after being winless in the last three games and top of the table Wycombe up next in the league it looks set for another loss for the Grecians which could see them drop down to 16th if results don’t go their way. Leon Brook said he would be over the moon with even just a point against The Chairboys and believes it would be a massive confidence boost for the players and could help them to progress into the top half of the table going into the new year.
There is a massive boost for Exeter going forward with star player Demetri Mitchell finally returning from an acl injury after just over a year on the sidelines. This could be a gamechanger going forward and could turn Exeter’s fortunes around with their fixture against bottom of the league Burton which will be a must win game for Gary Caldwell and his players as they aim to progress up the league table.
