Ford replaces Smith at fly-half to face New Zealand

George Ford returns to fly-half this Saturday in place of Fin Smith to face New Zealand in the third weekend of the Autumn Nations Series.

Despite Smith pulling the strings of England’s 38-18 victory over Fiji, the Sale Sharks fly-half takes the starting shirt against the All Blacks leaving Smith out of the 23-man squad all together.

Ford has been on top form of late with his performances against Australia, for Sale and steering the clean sweep of their tour in the Americas this summer.

Head coach Steve Borthwick is confident with his choice as he says ‘George has been playing really well’ and that ‘His experience is certainly one of the factors’ that won him the starting 10 shirt this coming Saturday to face New Zealand.

The Ford over Smith controversy has sparked debate on social media. The 23-year-old is highly regarded as the bright future of this squad, sparking discourse that England should be focusing on gaining the team experience and cohesion ahead of the 2027 World Cup and the future.

Smith is also regarded for his defensive capability and composure which are highlighted on social media. His form and current performance is argued by fans and pundits who believe he deserves the starting shirt.

However, Ford’s game management with his composure and tactical kicking skills are valuable assets to Borthwick’s squad but it is the Sale Sharks players leadership and experience that has given him the top spot this coming weekend.

His game knowledge and experience of tight games will hopefully be the right choice to face the All Blacks strong squad. Ford will win his 104th cap in Saturday’s clash with Borthwick backing his big game experience.
