‘Don’t be afraid, jump straight in’ is the advice from Plymouth Marjon student Liv Carpenter to surfing beginners.
Surfing is proven to help students mental well being, fitness, and resilience. At Plymouth Marjon students are big fans of surfing whilst studying. Liv says, ‘I love that it’s quite relaxing and it really just takes your mind off of everything, just being surrounded by the water and its just quite calm.’ Surfing is a great outlet for student’s mental health here at Marjon. Mark Parsons, a Sports Journalism student, agrees that surfing stops him from ‘thinking about things. I just get to Surf.’
Mark, 19, shares his favourite places to surf in Cornwall ‘Polzeath is pretty good. Bude’s pretty good as well. To be fair, I don’t mind quite a few beaches. I just like trying new places.’ Plymouth is an ideal area for students who are interested in surfing as they have access to so many amazing areas in the South West. Liv, 18, says ‘I enjoy Constantine, Polzeath, Fistral’ guaranteeing that they will have good waves.
If you’re interested in surfing Mark shared a few tips for beginners. Parsons says ‘to start slow, don’t go for massive waves. Just start with like tiny waves just getting the transition right from when you’re lying on the board to standing up.’ Surfing is a powerful stress relief for uni students, if you feel like this would be something you’re interested in here at Marjon the surf and snow society will welcome you with open arms or join your local club!
