Exeter City are yet again favourites for promotion from League 2 this year after making the play off finals and losing 3 times over the last 5 years. After a strong start this season under Matt Taylor recording only one lose in a league prior to this fixture against Grimsby Town (3-1) City were flying high in the automatic promotion places and were favourites for this fixture against Cambridge on the 19th October who were currently sitting mid table who hadn’t registered a win all competitions since the 17th September with a 4-0 win over Mansfield Town in the League.
City looked woeful in the first 25 minutes and paid the price just before the half time whistle as Luke Hannant opened the scoring. With conceding first the Grecians expected a better response in the 2nd half but the players provided a rather lacklustre and unambitious performance as U’s ran rings around the city backline with Jack Roles, George Taft and Andrew Dallas scoring respectively.
The Grecians will be hoping to put what has been a poor display against Cambridge behind them as they face Scunthorpe United at Glanfield Park On the 22nd October and Cambridge will be hoping to maintain some consistancy in form as they face Grimbsy Town at Abbey Stadium.
Exeter City manager Matt Taylor insists that all thoughts are On Tuesday’s game against Scunthorpe United and not Saturday’s forthcoming Devon Derby against Plymouth Argyle who currently sit it in 8th 6 points of City so the next couple of games will be pivotal for both teams.
