Task 4 – ACADEMIC BOOK REVIEW

Identifying Additional Learning Needs – Christine Macintyre

The book im reviewing is an interesting book that explains from the very beginning how young children starting nursery may feel with additional needs and how nursery is for them, also what behavours they may present.  It offers different suggestions and techniques to help recognise the triggers, to deal with challenging behaviour. It gives examples of children and their behaviours, then offers strategies that could be used to help with these behaviours. It gives practitioners ideas what certain conditions might present their selves like.  What to expect from a child with Autism or ADHD for instance. Not that all children are the same but some traits or behaviours can be linked. It gives nursery practitioners clues on how to identify additional needs.

This book shows nursery practitioners how to see the world through a child’s view. It offers case studies to give examples of children’s experiences with additional needs. This book explains early identification processes, communication between parents and professionals. The book helps practitioners to spot early indications of conditions like dyspraxia, dyslexia and Autism.

Finally the book covers how parents, professionals and children working together can maximise opportunities for learning.

Task 2 – REFERENCING

To learn to reference correctly using the APA referencing format. Please use the referencing guide (on learning space) to help you

(a) Using two published journal articles, related to SEN or disability, skim through and locate places where referencing has been used.

Do the same for two books.

Record the similarities and differences.

(b) What is the key information needed for:

(i) a book

(ii) a journal article

(a) 1,  British journal of special education  2, Down syndrome research and practice

I found the similarities for a book and Journal referencing are that immediately after a reference is used there is a small bracket of details saying one Author name, book title, date, then at the end of an article or book you can find a more detailed list of information of exactly where to find the reference, ie,  All authors that contributed to article, page number, ect.

Referencing has been used to show evidence collected after investigating studies.

(b) The key information needed for

(I) a Book is,

* Author, (Surname first)

*Book title

*Date published

*Page number

*Publisher

The key information needed for an article is,

* Author, (Surname first)

*Book title

*Date published

*Page number

*Publisher

Here is an article I found using Mendeley,

Problematising parent-professional partnerships in education
Hodge NRunswick-Cole K
Disability and Society
2008

Here is a reference this article uses,

(Read 2000; Cole 2004; Seligman and Darling 2007)

Here is another article I found using Mendeley,

Disability and Society
2018

Here is a reference this article uses,

ASAD, T. 1986. “The concept of cultural translation in British Social Anthropology”. In Writing Culture,, Edited by: MARCUS, G. and CLIFFORD, J. 141–164. Berkley: University of California Press. [Google Scholar]

As you can see there are different referencing methods to use.

The first book I looked through for a reference was,

Inclusion.

Here is a reference I found that this book used, Ainscow, M. (1991a) Effective Schools for All: An alternative Approach to Special Needs in Education, in M. Ainscow (ed).
