Connect with Others

Keeping in touch with our friends and family is more important now than ever. It can be hard to reach out to others, especially when we feel lo but spending time with someone can help to improve your mental health and wellbeing.

Here are some ways that you can get and stay connected at this difficult time:

  • Check in on each other. Just a quick text or call to check in on someone can brighten their day and make them feel less alone.

  • Make plans. Arrange to ‘meet’, albeit virtually, by video call. There are a number of video chat apps available for you to use such as Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype or Snapchat.

  • Connect daily. You can set up group chats and share music, photos and memes that make you smile. Or do something out of the ordinary and send a postcard or a letter to someone.

  • Have a film night. You can have a Netflix Party using a plug-in that enables you to stream your chosen film at the same time. There’s even a chat function so you can talk about what you’re watching. Or, you can start a film at the same time and use a shared WhatsApp group or FaceBook group to chat.

  • Join a book club. Again these are available online with clubs popping up via Zoom, Twitter and Instagram.

  • Connect with your interests. Get involved with online activities from yoga classes to social drinks, there is something available for everyone.

  • Leave the radio or TV on. Just hearing background noise can offer comfort.

  • Talk to friends, family, volunteers or professionals.

  • Find something you are interested in and volunteer some of your time. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and make new friends.
