When you are very upset or angry it can be hard to think about what you need to do to help you feel better or calm down. A coping toolbox is a place for you to keep the things that will help keep you during periods of distress. You may find that you want items that evoke positive memories, items that you find comforting, items that offer a distraction or a combination of the three.
Some ideas for you to keep in your toolbox are:
- Pictures
- A notebook and pen
- CDs
- A blanket
- A cuddly toy
- Helpline numbers (such as Samaritans)
- A colouring book and pencils
- Your favourite film
- Silly putty
- Your favourite book
- A list of reminders for effective strategies such as breathing techniques
