With Freshers’ 2018 getting ever closer, I thought I’d write about how to make the most of your start at Marjon. You may be feeling excited about starting a new adventure, or slightly apprehensive about what’s to come but rest assured you are not the only person to feel like this. As soon as you arrive on your first day and you meet your Resident Student Assistant (RSA) and flat mates, the nerves will start to disappear, and you’ll be having a great time during Freshers’!
Move In Day for most students is Sunday 16 September 2018. Student Ambassadors and RSA’s are on hand all day to help you carry all your luggage into your new room and help you settle in. You’ll get to meet the other people in your hall or house and make your room your own. Bring fairy lights, picture frames, things to make your room look homely. See the University website for details about Move In Day and what to pack. Once you’ve unpacked there will lots of activities and things to do to help break the ice and make friends.
Freshers’ Festival begins on Monday 17 September and is two weeks packed full of events. Check out the Marjon Student Union ’18/19 Official Group on Facebook to find out what’s happening and keep up to date. Don’t forget your fancy dress costumes! Freshers events are a great way to get involved and have fun, it will make you feel at home. If you’re a student who is going to have to learn how to cook for the first time being away, pop over to the chocolate fondue, cream tea and cupcake making events to keep yourself topped up!
If you’re sporty or looking to join a club, Freshers’ Fayre will take place on Friday 21 September. This is where you can meet all the different clubs and their committee members. They will be there to answer any questions and let you know all the information you will need to know. You do not need to commit at this point, just go and have a look at everything and see what takes your fancy, it may be something you love and do regularly or something that you’ve never expected you would enjoy. There will be multiple sports events during the week including 02 Touch Rugby, Plym-bledon and Futsal so get a team together from your hall. And don’t forget to pick up all the free pens you will ever need for the year!
I won’t spoil the surprises lined up for you in Freshers’ but there will be something for everyone, so take the plunge and join in with it. After the fun of Freshers’ week, the real work begins! Be committed and take responsibility for your learning. It isn’t like school, your teachers will be expecting extra work and research outside of lectures, your parents won’t be there to nag you to do revision. It is a big step up from school and you can make amazing memories; so here are my top tips to make the most of your time at Marjon. People say that time flies at university and they are totally right. More so than I ever thought possible. Do everything you can to make memories and put yourself in the best position you can be in for when you leave.
