It has been announced today that Derriford Hospital has been awarded nearly £30 million in funding to build a new Urgent and Emergency Care Hub.
Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, revealed the funding was part of a £168 million injection into the south west, with a further £12 million being invested in new diagnostic scanners and digital histopathology (equipment used to study changes in tissue caused by disease) across Devon and Cornwall.
The majority of the money awarded to Derriford Hospital will be used to build a new state-of-the-art facility that will replace the dated Emergency department, which was built back in the 1970’s.
Staff at Derriford Hospital are said to be “over the moon” with the funding and building work is set to begin in 2020.
