Chelsea and Manchester City put on a thrilling show at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and while the conditions were difficult, both teams fought through it and grabbed a point each, with the match ending 4-4.
The game started off as most people might have predicted, with City grabbing the lead through a penalty from Erling Haaland, who was fouled by Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella. There was controversy however, with Chelsea players arguing that the full back was fouled first, and even shouts suggesting that winger Jeremy Doku fouled a blue in the box too.
Chelsea responded only four minutes later with a header from Thiago Silva which was too well placed for City goalkeeper Ederson to deny, making it 1-1. Just another eight minutes later, ex-City winger Raheem Sterling made it 2-1 for the hosts after defender Josko Gvardiol couldn’t find his feet and lost possession of the ball.
Manuel Akanji made it 2-2 in the last few minutes of the first half, glancing home a cross from Bernardo Silva – this left it all to play for in the second half.
Once again, it was a bright start for the visitors who made it 3-2 just two minutes into the second half, after Haaland scrambled the ball into the net from a Julian Alvarez low cross.
It took Chelsea another twenty minutes to find an equalizer, which they did through a simple finish from forward Nicolas Jackson after Ederson parried a powerful shot into the Chelsea striker’s path.
It seemed like a winner for either team was off the table as the final whistle drew nearer, but in the 86th minute, City midfielder Rodri hit a low-driven shot from outside the box, which deflected off Thiago Silva and creeped past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
For City fans, the goal from Rodri seemed to win the match, but in the 95th minute, defender Ruben Dias fouled Chelsea substitute Armando Broja in the box, resulting in a penalty. It was then calmly slotted past Ederson from another ex-City player, Cole Palmer, and both teams took home a point.
