In this session, a female client aged 20 was treated. The client had complaints of upper back pain due to stress with her work and sitting at their desk all day. Treatment was given to the upper fibres of the trapezius.

The client didn’t have any contraindications, so treatment was given straight away. After observing the client’s posture, it was clear that the left shoulder was slightly higher than the other, and there was a slight arching at the top of the shoulders, suggesting a tightness within the upper trapezius and levator scapula muscle.

Effleurage was applied to the area to help warm up the muscle before any deep tissue techniques were applied. Petrissage was then given around the left scapula to help identify any tightness or knots. These techniques were also applied to the upper shoulders and neck, where there was a tightness within the neck muscles and levator scapula.

NMT’s were applied after knots were found at the superior border of the scapula. This helped to reduce pressure as well as pain. After deep tissue techniques were implemented, the client said how pain within the muscle had subsided.

In the next session, MET’s can be looked at within the clients neck and shoulder to help improve ROM. A spine and shoulder assessement can be competed to help determine whether there are any problems with the clients joint, muscle or ligament which may be causing the clients muscle pain.
