In this session, a female client aged 20 was treated. The client had complaints of upper back pain due to stress with her work and sitting at their desk all day. Treatment was given to the upper fibres of the trapezius.

The client didn’t have any contraindications, so treatment was given straight away. After observing the client’s posture, it was clear that the left shoulder was slightly higher than the other, suggesting a tightness within this muscle.

Effleurage was applied to the area to help warm up the muscle before any deep tissue techniques were applied. Petrissage was then given around the left scapula to help identify any tightness or knots. These techniques were also applied to the upper shoulders and neck, where there was a tightness within the neck muscles and levator scapula. After deep tissue techniques were implemented, the client said how pain within the muscle had subsided.

In the next session, stretching techniques and NMT’s will be looked at to help improve the clients ROM. Testing and measuring the clients ROM before and after treatment can help to determine whether the treatment had been effective. A shoulder and spine assessment can also be carried out to help identify any problems with the muscles/joints.
