In this session a 26-year-old male was treated. The client had complaints of upper back pain which could be due to stress of work, sitting at a desk or training at a high intensity at the gym.

After observing the client’s posture, it was clear that the right shoulder was more elevated than the left, suggesting a tightness within the muscle. Treatment began with effleurage to the upper trapezius fibres to help warm up the muscle.

NMT’s were applied after knots were found at the superior border of the scapula at the supraspinatus muscle, this may also suggest the tightness within the muscle, causing the elevated right shoulder. This helped to reduce pressure as well as pain. After the application of this technique, the client said how pain within the muscle had subsided.

A shoulder assessment can be completed at the beginning of the session o help determine whether there are any issues with the clients joints, muscles or ligaments. Also assessing the clients ROM before and after treatment allows for a comparison and to determine whether the treatment had been effective.
