Marjon MRes student, Helen Ellwood

Helen is a Master of Research (MRes) student at Marjon, continuing her studies from an Undergraduate degree. Read Helen’s experience of studying at Marjon and following her passion.

“I live in Plymouth, so I visited both Plymouth Marjon University and the University of Plymouth to consider my options. After an open day at Marjon, I decided it was an inclusive, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere that was definitely the place for me. I started at Marjon on the BSc (Hons) Psychology programme, and I’m now studying a Master of Research (MRes) course, focusing on psychology.

“An MRes is challenging. It stretches my academic research knowledge and understanding with an independent project that I’m passionate about. This combination has enabled me to develop enhanced analytical skills and greater knowledge of my chosen topic of menopause.

“After Semester A (which finishes at Christmas), our time on campus reduces significantly due to the independent style of the term. This requires real dedication, strong time management and organisational skills to stay on top of your work and stay motivated.

“At Marjon, I’ve been able to put an idea into action by running a Menopause Café on campus. This has enabled me to create an environment that allows women to share their experiences and feelings, and meet some amazing people.

“After graduating, I’m considering progressing to a PhD in clinical psychology, or maybe a psychology role in the NHS, using the skills and knowledge I’ve gained at Marjon.

“Marjon offers a sense of belonging that inspires you to become more than you think is possible. Its heart strengthens you when it’s tough, offers warmth through the many wonderful staff, and genuinely cares about you as a person.

“Marjon is a friendly place whose desire is to see students excel academically, emotionally, and physically. Don’t hesitate to be part of it.

Push yourself further and achieve more than you thought possible with an MRes at Marjon. Get started here.
